Altec N-800E Schematic

Hello everyone. How is everybody doing today? I am new to the forum and I am in the Southern California area. I have been reading Altec posts for a couple of months now and wanted to introduce myself. My name is David, 42yrs of age and semi retired Painter. My dad has been into vintage stereos his entire life and he purchased a set of Altec 831A-Capistrano's back in 1962 from a company called White Front. Anyways, my dad has given me his Altecs and they sound amazing. I did notice that 1 of the speakers is a little flat compared to the other. I have gone through and tested the drivers on both speakers and the DCR reading is the same. I even switched the drivers to the good cabinet and it sounds better. I checked to see if I wired out of phase, which I didn't. This leads me to believe that the Crossovers are in need of a recap.

Is there anyone out there that could help me. I have never repapped a crossover before and I can't find a schematic for the N-800E network anywhere on the internet. Does anyone have one that they are willing to upload that I could take a look at? Also, the network is coated with tar or something like that, does that need to be put back into the network after I do the recap. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You very much J Henry. Do you know if I have to put the black tar back over everything? I've never done this before.

No need for the tar.....just build the new crossover as per the schematic.

Not sure what drivers are in the Capistranos...maybe someone else here can advise whether the 800E is going to be suitable for them.

The drivers in the Capistrano's are the 803B woofer, 811B HF horn with the 802D HF Driver. My dad told me that they were also in the A7 when he purchased them. He chose the Capistrano's because of the furnature look.

:welcome: to the board Dave, Didn't JHenry post a schematic for you.If you can remove the tar carefully and change out the caps, resistors it can only help those old caps had tolerances like 20% today they are 5% and better.But as old as they are they are in dire need of replacement.Just by being 45+ years old. Hi John, JHenry did post a schematic. I just posted a question on what is the best way to get the tar out. carefully scrape it, or is there a solution that someone can recommend to loosen it up. I'm just worried that if I scrape it I will bust a wire somewhere in it.
The schematic that was posted is the N800F, in which I also have, but I don't know if the same caps r used in the N800E yet. The E crossover is in a large rectangle case while the F is in a square case.

I was telling my dad whom gave me the speakers about doing a recap on them, he told me to leave them alone, they sound good the way they are.
